if Pat Benatar says that love is a battlefield and Eliot follows up Prufrock with the Waste Land... chances are, between poetry and pop culture (circa 1980), we've got very little chance of love in the sunshiny way they kept promising when we were little. which is why i always look to the cheese and optimism of musical theatre... which clings to the sentiment that..."grey skies are gonna clear up ... put on a " and the like.
and what if they say... "that is not what i meant at all" ?
words are open to interpretation.. that is what makes them so beautiful and so slippery.
Would it have been worth while,
To have bitten off the matter with a smile,
To have squeezed the universe into a ball
To roll it toward some overwhelming question ...
the overwhelming question will always be there.
